Suicide in young men continues to rise

· Children and Young People Sector
Data published yesterday by Samaritans Scotland informs of the stark reality of suicide figures in Scotland. The number of suicides, particluarly in men are continuing to rise. In 2018, 784 were recorded with an increase to 833 in 2019.

Data has shown for a while that suicide is the number one killer for men Under 50 yet the statistics show that for the second year this figure has increased in 14 - 25 year olds. It is critical urgent action is taken. The current Suicide Prevention Action Plan ends in 2021 but Scottish Government and COSLA are already on track to develop a new strategy following on from the current plan.
